The Future of Homebuilding: Cantiro’s Exploration into Steel Frame Home Construction

At Cantiro Homes, we’ve always believed in pushing residential construction forward – exploring new materials, technologies, and techniques that create stronger, longer lasting homes for Alberta families.

Over the past several years, major advancements in digital manufacturing and precision engineered building systems have made steel frame homes a viable and exciting option for residential communities across Alberta.

This includes the emergence of sophisticated systems like SteelSafe™, an independent Canadian company utilizing FRAMECAD digital manufacturing technology to produce precision engineered steel components. Cantiro Homes has been collaborating closely with SteelSafe throughout our research and development work to explore how these innovations can be adapted for single family homes and townhomes at an attainable price point.

Where Our Research Began

In late 2023, Cantiro Homes began investigating whether steel frame systems, long trusted in commercial and institutional buildings, could be adapted for residential construction in a way that improved durability and long-term performance without increasing costs for homeowners. Our early focus was whether steel frame homes could deliver meaningful everyday benefits for families.

Proving the Concept in 2024

From February through October 2024, we built and monitored our first steel frame test home in Riverstead at Keswick. This home allowed us to evaluate the real-world performance of steel framing in Alberta’s climate. The results were compelling and exceeded Cantiro Homes’ benchmarks for quality, accuracy, and structural consistency.

The strength, straightness, and dimensional stability we observed gave us confidence to expand into a broader pilot program.

Expanding the Research: A Multi-Phase 18 Home Program

In early 2025, Cantiro Homes committed to a large scale, real-world test: 18 steel framed homes in the community of Alces in Southeast Edmonton.

This three-phase initiative helped us validate:

  • Design conversions from wood frame to steel frame
  • Construction efficiency, including rapid framing cycles
  • Municipal permitting and approval processes
  • Scalability for future communities
  • Homeowner relevant performance factors, such as energy efficiency, stability and consistency

Each phase included:

  • One 20’ front drive single family home
  • One 24’ front drive single family home
  • One four-unit townhome building
